THIMPHU (Bhutan), May 29 (Bernama) – Bhutan, a country strategically located
between India and China at the eastern end of Himalayas, seeks support for
its candidacy as a non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security
Council.
The country, which has been a member of UN for about 40 years, made its mark
with it’s pursue of Gross National Happiness Index (GNH).
In recent times, there has been a growing interest by the international
community in Bhutan’s concept of GNH which led to Bhutan proposing a resolution
at the UN General Assembly last year – on happiness, which was passed
unanimously.
“Having gained so much from UN in the last 40 years, we feel it is time for
us to move further. Bhutan is now the candidate for the post of
non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2013-2015 period,”
Bhutan’s prime minister Jigmi Y. Thinley said.
He was speaking to ambassadors and high commissioners based in Dhaka and New
Delhi who represented 12 countries.
Asked if it’s strategic location between the two rising economy of Asia is a
reason for Bhutan to seek for the post, Thinley said: “I would imagine that
Bhutan as a country sitting between India and China, it must take advantage of
the opportunities the rapidly prospering countries will offer."
The results of Bhutan's candidacy in the UN Security Council are expected to
